E.M.O. (Enthusiastic Musician’s Orchestra) is Brisbane’s premier vehicle for the composition and performance of new and exciting music for big band. Comprised of some of Brisbane’s finest jazz musicians, E.M.O. has all the bluster and bombast of a classic big band combined with the subtlety and refinement of a modern jazz orchestra. With the announcement of the next Essentially Ellington festival, run in collaboration with JMI, to be held in August, the lads and lasses of E.M.O. have decided to get on board and celebrate. Diverging from the local compositions they are best known for, E.M.O will be performing, for two special shows, the superb music of the master of swing, Duke Ellington. Over 3 hours of new music has been written specifically for EMO by the likes of Brisbane composers such as Andrew Butt (Winner of the Jazz QLD Music Award 2013/14) , Rafael Karlen (Australian Jazz Bell Award finalist), Josh Hatcher, Wade Gregory, Joe O’Conner (National Jazz Award Winner), Chris Vale, Lachlan Bell, Andrew Ball, and Andrew Garton. To date, the EMO big band has released 3 full length albums of original Australian works. They have collaborated with some of Australia’s finest musicians as feature artists and soloists including John Riley (Village Vanguard Orchestra), Kristen Berardi (Winner of the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival’s International Vocal Competition, Winner of the National Jazz Award for Voice at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival 2012), Julian Arguelles (Dave Holland) and most recently Dale Barlow (Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers). $10 entry ~ licensed bar ~ all ages Jam sessions from 6pm and 10pm
